Tips For Fighting Fall Allergies

The crisp, cool air of fall usually entices people to spend more time outdoors -- whether it may be hiking, going for walks or indulging in fun fall activities. But time outside during the fall season be accompanied by itchy, watery eyes, stuffiness and a scratchy throat…all due to fall allergens.

Fall allergies don’t have to get in the way of your daily life. There are some preventative measures you can take to stay ahead of the chronic sniffles. Here are five tips to combat fall allergies:

Wear A Face Mask Outside

To minimize your exposure to allergens use a face mask when you rake (or play in) the leaves to keep your sinuses protected. Also, removing your “outside” clothes when you get back inside will stop pollen, mold spores, or other allergens from traveling inside your home. Immediately throwing them in the wash and changing your clothes will make a world of a difference when avoiding pesky fall allergens.

Keep The Windows and Doors Closed

Open windows welcome pollen. When your allergies are high this fall season, close your windows and doors. Instead, use your home’s air conditioner to keep cool or the heat to keep warm.

Tidy Your Home

Simple cleaning tasks at a minimum of once a week can make a big impact on helping fight stuffy sinuses this season. Seasonal allergies can be combatted with some simple home maintenance tasks to keep your space tidy, such as:

  • Decluttering commonly used spaces in your home
  • Regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter
  • Dusting surfaces with a microfiber cloth
  • Washing linens, curtains, rugs and other fabric items
  • Cleaning windows and fans

Check The Pollen Counts

Check the pollen and mold counts before you head outside. There are many online tools you can use to keep tabs on how much of these allergens are floating around. Also, pollen counts are usually highest between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., so minimizing early-morning activities may help you get a jumpstart on a symptom-free day.
